The Diploma in Counselling and Communications is a comprehensive tertiary qualification which provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective interpersonal communication and counselling. As well as a competency based experiential process of learning, students are exposed to basic concepts in applied psychology. This course is highly relevant for work in the fields of community Services, Health, Human Resource Management, Counselling and other related fields.

Course Description

Duration : 1 year part-time
Fieldwork : 140 hours
Entry criteria : G.C.E. 'A'/'O' level or over 21 years

On completion :
This Diploma meets the minimum training standards required by the Psychotherapy & Counselling Federation of Australian (PACFA) for professional registration.

Modules Information :

Interpersonal Skills
You acquire understanding of factors affecting the interpersonal communication process and how to apply this knowledge in real situations. Skills learned may be applied to both personal and workplace interactions.

Conflict Management
Through this module you gain knowledge of conflict management concepts and techniques as a framework for effective action. Skills acquired are applicable to a wide range of situations and have both personal and workplace relevance.

Counselling Skills 1 and 2
Introduces you to the counselling process. With an applied approach, it provides you with a range of counselling skills and develops your effectiveness as a helper in the counselling role.

Counselling Methods 1 and 2
This module provides a range of theories, methods and practice in counselling. You learn to develop a critical understanding and appreciation of the approaches used in counselling.

Social, Legal and Ethical Issues for Counsellors
This module provides an awareness and understanding of social, legal and ethical issues. It offers a knowledge base for understanding both personal and client needs and issues, as well as the legal and community services available for people with cultural differences, disabilities and victims of physical and emotional abuse. Students are expected to understand the effect of labelling and stereotyping both for themselves as counsellors and their clients.

Alcohol and Other Drugs Counselling
This module provides the knowledge and skills to recognise the presence of substance misuse issues in clients. You are expected to integrate core counselling skills and methods for assisting substance dependent clients.

Family and Relationship Counselling
This module provides both a theoretical and practical framework for working with couples and families. It utilises and develops the skills acquired in previous counselling modules.

Crisis Intervention
This module focuses on developing effective crisis intervention skills. You will learn to identify different types of crisis and apply relative options for helping those in crisis.

Mental Health Issues
Current issues in mental health as well as the features and behaviours of those with mental health problems are discussed. The emphasis is on providing you with the knowledge and skills to identify a client with a mental health problem.

Counselling in Loss (Grief Counselling)
Here you gain understanding of the grief process and consider the impact that culture and your own personal history can have upon your interaction with clients. The emphasis is upon you acquiring strategies and skills to help clients cope with loss.
